Is Your Application Getting Noticed or Passed Up?

Are you wondering why you may never hear back from a company that you have applied to?

Applications typically do not provide the opportunity to sell your qualifications, whereas providing a resume can. What makes a professional resume for a commercial motor vehicle driver stand out?

Relevance is an important first component.  Have you tailored it to match the job description and the profession you are applying for? What present and past employment connects you as a commercial motor vehicle driver?

Not tailoring your resume can have employers quickly moving on to the next candidates!

Here’s how to get employers to pay attention to your resume:

  • If you have unrelated past positions or a career, they should be listed last, with your driving employment history listed first
  • As a new entry-level driver, you may not have any driving experience yet, but at a minimum, indicate the name, location, and the dates that you attended and completed driving school
  • An accurate timeline that shows concise starting and end dates of each employer, beginning with the most recent employer
  • Providing a brief list of responsibilities associated with those jobs that stand out from basic expectations
  • Indicate the type of equipment you drove for each position
  • Include your CDL license and its’ expiration date and any endorsements you may have
  • Provide your safety record and the number of miles you have driven accident-free, and any awards you may have earned
  • Indicate the goals and objectives you are seeking from the position. Place the statement at the top of your resume. Why do you want to work for the company you’re applying to? Never say for better pay! Pair your statement to “answer” the job description in the advertisement
  • Include key skills and proficiencies such as computer literacy, use of electronic logs, navigation systems, and apps, knowledge of DOT rules and regulations, communication, problem solving, training others, and any others

Save your resume as a word document to modify it any time. Simply rename each new one!
